Government Grants for Small Business

Government Assistance Through Small Business Grants

The Economic Dilemma

The country has been thrown in a quagmire because of the recent economic crisis. Stalwarts in the financial arena toppled down without regard to tradition and history. The incident brought forth disaster in the business community causing a domino effect with one company folding after one another. It is said to be one of the worst economic situations the nation has faced since the Great Depression.

Big businesses have suffered huge losses. Car manufacturing companies have had to close down several of their factories, leaving thousands in a state of bewilderment and despair. Smaller banks have closed their doors due to insolvency. Retailers had sold out their last dresses and pairs of shoes. As sales in department stores plummet, that of goodwill thrift stores and discount retailers, such as Walmart, has soared. The economic atmosphere seems bleak and gloomy. Will the country be able to rise up from the dumps where it was forced to be in? Can it still recover? If yes, the next question would be when. Everything seems to be uncertain as to where the country’s headed.

There are now talks for a government bail-out of some industries particularly that of car manufacturing. If that happens, how will it proceed? How will such actions affect the rest of the business community? Will there be an economic boost if the government dips its powerful hands in the ailing trade and industry? If it can do this for big companies, can it also offer assistance to the smaller businesses?

Assistance to Small Businesses

It might not be a common knowledge but the government has exactly that program which has been in place for more than a decade. Owners of small businesses can apply for financial assistance in the form of a loan or a grant and check in which category they qualify.

In most cases, the assistance needed would be used for the purchase of new equipment or machinery in order to facilitate the expansion of the business. There are also those who would like to transfer to bigger areas or renovate the ones that they are currently using.  The problem is these businesses lack the extra capital to do so, hence the need for the grant.

The government scheme for small business grants follow almost the same format as that used in giving other types of grants. The applicant still needs to prepare a proposal supplemented by strong reasoning in order to convince the grants committee that they deserve to be given such a grant. Permits, financial statements and other pertinent documents have to be prepared in order to support the proposal. It would also be an advantage if there are some recommendations or citations from recognized entities.

It is also important that the business conform to the standards set by the US Small Business Administration or the SBA. These standards are also being referred to by federal governments in the processing of grants if they are the ones granting them. Usually it takes into account the number of employees or the revenue raised by the company.

If everything is in order and the papers have been passed then all that is left would be the approval of the committee tasked to handle such transactions.
